Asheville City Council Passes Larchmont

A controversial affordable housing complex proposed for North Asheville got the go-ahead from elected officials Tuesday. The City Council voted unanimously to rezone the 2.3-acre former Naval Reserve Center site off East Larchmont Road near Merrimon Avenue. The move paves the way for a 60-apartment complex reserved for low-income workers and other residents who meet income thresholds. The developer is the nonprofit Mountain Housing Opportunities.

Planning and Zoning Approves Larchmont Project

The Larchmont project, a 60-unit affordable housing complex off Merrimon Avenue, cleared another hurdle on March 4, as Asheville's Planning and Zoning Commission approved the requested rezoning on a 5-1 vote.
More than 50 people packed the chamber to weigh in on the proposed project.
Piloted by Mountain Housing Opportunities, an Asheville nonprofit, Larchmont would be built on the former Navy Reserve site, which MHO is buying from Buncombe County.

Mountain Housing Opportunities Loan Fund Receives Certification as CDFI

Mountain Housing Opportunities Loan Fund has been certified as a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) by the US Treasury Department’s CDFI Fund. CDFI’s are mission-driven financial institutions that provide financial products and services to people and communities underserved by the traditional banking system. This certification makes MHO’s Loan Fund one of 21 CDFI’s in North Carolina and only the second based in Asheville.

Merrimon Area Affordable Housing Wins Key Vote

A proposed 60-unit apartment complex for low-income workers won a key vote Wednesday night after hours of debate between neighbors, affordable housing advocates and others. The Asheville Planning and Zoning Commission voted 5-1 to recommend that the City Council change zoning rules to pave the way for the project behind the Merrimon Avenue post office.

Merrimon-area affordable housing up for vote

Supporters of a planned apartment complex off Merrimon Avenue claim it will provide desperately needed affordable rental housing. But the proposed 60-unit development will come at a price, nearby residents say, with two three-story buildings looming over existing homes.
The proposed apartment complex is up for a vote tonight with the Asheville Planning and Zoning Commission.
